San Felipe Fort in Bacalar, also known as the Fort of San Felipe de Bacalar or the Castle of San Felipe de Bacalar, is located in the city of Bacalar in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. It is named after Andrés Quintana Roo, a prominent figure in Mexico’s independence. The fort was commissioned in 1725 by Antonio de Figueroa y Silva, the Spanish governor of Yucatán, as a defensive stronghold to protect the region from advancing English colonizers. Construction was completed in 1733. Designed by Italian engineer Juan Podio, the fort combines austerity and functionality, balancing sobriety with elegance. Since 1965 it has housed the Museum of Piracy, which was later re-inaugurated in 1983.
